La Rioja

La Rioja, the picturesque autonomous region in north-central Spain, is known throughout the world for its fine wine of the same name. That said, La Rioja is also a notable footwear producer. The Neosens brand from Quel is known for its extravagant Baroque-inspired designs. The Art brand, also from Quel, targets the metropolitan urban crowd with cheeky, street-art inspired footwear. The brand Gaimo from Arnedo opts for simplicity and subdued elegance, producing espadrille-inspired sandals with quality leather uppers.

Pons Quintana: Carmen

Covered in a velvet-like purple fabric (or suede?) and lined with golden colored leather, these steep, narrow wedges by Pons Quintana are fit for a queen. After all, who was Carmen if not a gypsy queen of hearts? The golden thread runs, literally, through the whole shoe: an elegant golden leather bow at the front is continued by the large decorative stitches along the scalloped sides and the whole is topped by a magnificent golden ankle strap. All this opulence rests on a thin black ridged rubber sole, which means that the shoes are not only beautiful but also comfortable. And yet this modern practical sole does not take the tiniest bit away from the overall Renaissance splendour. Another triumph by Pons Quintana!
